Did You Hear The One About The 2 Construction Workers?

2014 Helping Up Mission grad and now-staff member Martin and I saw two guys constructing a very large sign for the Jewish Museum on the corner of Lombard and Lloyd streets yesterday. Since they’re our HUM neighbors, I was interested in what was going on and stopped to ask the guys.

They were working outside in pleasant weather, but I still thought they appeared happier than most construction guys I see on the job. But I was even more surprised when I approached them!

One guy looked at me, stuck out his hand, and said, “Hi Pastor Gary!”

It was Jimmy who was at HUM in 2014. When he got this job he left us before his graduation. He and Martin remembered each other.

I asked Jimmy how he was doing and said he’s been clean almost two years!

Then the other guy, Bruce, spoke up. He arrived at HUM in February 2012…and graduated in 2013. Bruce is going on four years clean!

Turns out Jimmy and Bruce grew up together and got high together. After being at HUM himself, Bruce finally got Jimmy to come, too.

This job has worked out well for Jimmy — so well that he got Bruce to join him…and today brought them back into HUM’s neighborhood. It was wonderful seeing them and hearing how well both are doing.

One graduated from our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program, the other didn’t…but both are HUM success stories!

This is why I love coming to work every day!
