Growing up without a lot of money, Kevin thought drugs would make him feel accepted and that material things would fulfill him.

“I always thought those were the things that defined me – money, a job,” he says. “I felt like worldly things would give me that confidence. And of course, it never worked out.”

Instead, his addiction stripped him of all his pride and ego.

When he came to Helping Up Mission, he had reached what he calls “spiritual bottom.” Since entering the Spiritual Recovery Program, he has taken classes and participated in work therapy, completely changing his outlook.

He shares, “Before coming to Helping Up Mission, I was a very selfish person. If I didn’t benefit from it, I wasn’t doing it. Now I’m the total opposite.”

Knowing there were people he’d never met who cared about him strongly encouraged him as well.

“I never realized that people believe in this program and they believe in us. I always thought people judged us, like ‘those addicts.’ It’s amazing to see that people really want to see you succeed.”
