RAISING UP

Dear HUM Family,

Each day at Helping Up Mission, we have a front row seat to see seeds of hope grow. From crisis and despair to hope and change is often a complex and winding journey. But as Katelyn shares in this month’s story, “It’s possible to get clean. It’s possible to be a mom in recovery. It’s possible to laugh again.”

Because of you, HUM is a place to hope (and laugh) again. Children being reunited with their parents, like Brighton and Katelyn, are part of the journey to transformation. The hope that it creates is tangible and has a multigenerational impact.

Thanks for standing with us and supporting this community of hope we call Helping Up Mission. We truly couldn’t do this work without your prayers, service and giving.

Serving with you,

K. Daniel Stoltzfus, CEO

Focus on Recovery

Pamela Wilkerson, Senior Director - Center for Women & Children

Katelyn’s testimony demonstrates the profound impact of comprehensive support and a community that fosters a loving, therapeutic culture in helping women achieve long-term recovery

Katelyn’s story is one of many shared by women who come through our doors, sharing their need for rehab, structure, love and the courage to surrender and believe in themselves.

Katelyn stresses that she wouldn’t be where she is today without the “saving grace” and “community of hope” at the Center for Women & Children. Still, I can truly say, we are much more hopeful about the work we are doing here because of the transformative power of faith, science and community demonstrated through the lives of Katelyn and Brighton.

Where They ARE Now:

Dr. Gary Byers

I retired as Deputy Director at HUM in 2019 after 20+ years there. It was the most amazing years of my ministry! My wife, Gayle, and I retired to walk 3 miles daily, travel, continue excavating in the Holy Land, and serve at Trinity Southwest University and Veritas International University.

Over the past 6 years, we’ve walked most days, traveled 12–15 weeks a year, and continued excavations in Israel, Jordan and western New Mexico.

In 2023, retired CEO Bob Gehman joined our dig at Shiloh. This year, Jered Browning (2017 HUM grad) became the first HUM guy on one of my excavations!

Jered, a former student of mine, shared, “This adventure with Pastor Gary symbolizes and celebrates the journey of my recovery and redemption that began the day I graduated HUM.”

Hi to my HUM family—blessings in your walk with our LORD!

UPDATE:

Baltimore Running Festival

Helping Up Mission will not be participating as Team HUM in this year’s Baltimore Running Festival. We’re taking a thoughtful pause to focus on our 140th Anniversary Celebration—HUM Through the Ages. We’ll be back—stronger than ever.

Our Mission urgently needs donations of hygiene items and toiletries to support those in our care! Simple items like deodorant, foot powder, shampoo, conditioner and lotion can have a profound impact on someone’s dignity and well-being. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to basic hygiene necessities. Please consider donating today to help us spread hope and care in our community!
