“I’ve Decided It’s Good Being Gilbert Today!”

Gilbert’s an older guy who is at Helping Up Mission for the 3rd time. Before arriving the first time, and each time in between, he’s would up living in a tent in the woods.

Each trip to HUM Gilbert gets a little healthier, but today he told me he still struggles when things around him just seem to be stupid.

Yet this time he said, “I don’t want to use. I don’t even want to do things my own way anymore, either.” Gilbert knows he must learn how to face and deal with the things that cause him to use chemicals. This includes all that stupid stuff that happens around him every day!

Changing people, places and things will only take Gilbert so far. He must face and address his own feelings and emotions if things are really going to be different.

As they say in recovery, Gilbert is now open to “taking suggestions” about how to get better. He also says it’s working for him these days. In fact, when we finished our talk Gilbert said, “I’ve decided its good being Gilbert today!”
