No Thank You To That Beer!

On Mondays we share good experiences from the weekend. Marcel, now in our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program less than 2 months, is a big young guy with a strong will — a bit of a gentle giant…until he gets riled up!

He shared that he went to a sports bar over the weekend. He wanted to be there but didn’t want to drink any alcohol. Marcel had a coke.

He was enjoying himself and a young lady came up and offered him a beer. He said, “No thanks, I don’t want one.”

Marcel continued to sit there enjoying himself and the same young lady came back and, trying to be a little more persuasive, again offered him a beer. Again Marcel said he didn’t want one.

After a while, the same young lady came back a third time with the same offer. This time Marcel told her he was in recovery and had too many reasons in his life to not drink a beer!

She said, “Okay,” and then added, “Actually, I don’t really want this beer, either. Don’t even know why I bought it.”

Then she said, “Tell me about those reasons you don’t want to drink.”

While not an expert on the subject, Marcel explained the best he could about the spiritual recovery he was working on here at Helping Up Mission.

Not exactly the way I would have recommended he spend his afternoon…still I’m proud of him for taking a stand and speaking up.

Maybe Big M’s working on something, after all!
