“Never Been Clean 3 Straight Years in My Adult Life!”

Ran into Charles this morning as I was coming into our building and he was heading out to work. Fifty years old, he struggled with drugs for over three decades.

He arrived here three years ago and was ready to try a spiritual approach to recovery. He was always quiet, but also smiled a lot.

Charles settled in well here and graduated one year later. Without any better place to go, he decided to continue living in our graduate transitional housing on campus.

Today he reminded me that he started his present job just over one year year ago. He’s getting forty hours week and doing okay for now. But Charles did say, the time will come when he will be considering something else.

Then he said, “I have never been clean three straight years in my adult life! I’m taking it slow but the time will come and I’ll start making some changes!”

Charles is a perfect example of why I love my job — and it’s my privilege to serve here!
