Class of 2015 — Danny and Oscar

Last month, as Helping Up Mission celebrated its 130th year, we also celebrated 130 grads!

One of the themes that day was restoration of during the past year. Danny stood on the stage with his parents.

A grown man with children himself, Danny had been estranged from them all for some time. At issue was his addiction and, while his parents loved him, they didn’t have much in common anymore and had spent virtually no meaningful time together for quite a while.

At our graduation banquet, each spoke eloquently about the way things were and what’s happened since. And, while they weren’t present, an added bonus for Danny was the fact that he’s also been able to reconnect with his children, as well.

That day we also met Oscar. Born in Africa, he’s been in the US less than a decade.

Oscar got a good education and started his career here in America. He also met and married a wonderful woman.

But Oscar also found something else in America — he developed an addiction to alcohol. In just a short time it had ruined his career, marriage and even his relationship with the rest of his family.

But today life has changed for this 2015 graduate of our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program. One year later Oscar has his career back — after an honest talk with his future employer about being in recovery.

Oscar’s family is also back in his life…and so is his wife!

People love us and when the see the old me back — or even a new and improved version — they’re so willing to receive us back into their lives!
