65 Years Old…9 Months Clean…1st Time Since Age 12!

Growing up in Baltimore, Bobby’s been using and abusing both drugs and alcohol since age 12. Along the way had two careers — auto mechanic and truck driver — got married and had two daughters.

But, following his wife’s death over 35 years ago, Bobby became an agnostic. It’s only been the past 5 years that he’s been able to consciously consider God as real in the universe and valid in his life.

Retiring 3 years ago, Bobby had always been able to work every day. From personal experience, he doesn’t like the term “functional alcoholic. He says, “We can show up, but we don’t really function very well!”

It was after vodka and valium that Bobby wound up in the hospital. When he finished detox, they sent him to Helping Up Mission for our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program.

Bobby arrived here physically beat up — especially from that last V&V run. But he was ready to change some things and was open to hearing from God.

God talked…and Bobby listened!

Bobby got healthy again…and happy!

Yesterday he turned 65. Today he celebrates 9 months clean from all drugs and alcohol. It’s the longest time Bobby can remember that he’s not had some chemical in his body — since he was 12 years old!
