I remember his first day in class…it had obviously been a while since Kenny was in such a setting. Loud and “enthusiastic”(!) it just didn’t seem he’d be willing to stay long enough for good things to start happening in his life.
But Kenny wanted to change and was willing to try anything we suggested. He struggled, but completed his work, got off the initial black-out period for new guys and moved into the second phase of our Program.
Part of Kenny’s work involved repetitive neurological exercises — memorizing things…like Bible verses and the books of the Bible in order! After a rough start he got it all done — actually getting better each week.
There was true joy on his face and in his voice, each time he finished another one. Kenny was beginning to believe in himself again!
Now, almost 90 days in, he’s a different guy. Kenny’s “enthusiasm” is still there, but it’s been tempered by a new quiet confidence…in the process of recovery…and himself.
Last weekend, Kenny went to church with his sister and her family — people with a strong faith and active in ministry. Armed with all he was learning and now knew about the Bible…Kenny shined!
He even knew some things family didn’t know. The kids wondered, “What’s up with Uncle Kenny?!?!”
He was so excited sharing all this with me on Monday! He’s ready to learn some more that he can pass along.
Of course, this is just the start of a lifetime journey for Kenny. But he knows spiritual recovery really does work.
And I love my job!
