Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It’s Off To Work We Go…

As I arrived at work this morning, in the parking lot, I saw Ronald who was also heading out to work. We had a brief exchange and, with a big smile, he shared how grateful he is for his job and to Helping Up Mission for helping make this possible.

Once inside my office building I ran into Gerry who was also heading out to work. He enjoys his job and we had a short conversation — mostly back and forth trash talking, as we normally do!

Both Ronald and Gerry graduated from our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program — one in ’14, the other earlier this year. Both also decided to continue living here on our campus in graduate transitional housing while working in the community.

All the way through the Program, neither guy said much in class. Neither was hostile, but I couldn’t really tell if they were buying into spiritual recovery or not.

But here they are this morning — still clean, still accountable, going to work every day and appreciating the lives they have today!

I don’t doubt both look forward to a time in the future, when things will line up for them, and they can move on to their own places in the community. But today both are comfortable with calling the 1000 block of East Baltimore Street their home!

Man, I love my job!
