Gentle Spirit and Warm Smile

Dean’s 1 of the 6 graduates we have today, finishing 12 months of our Spiritual Recovery Program.  Years ago his uncle, also a Helping Up Mission grad, told him about our program and encouraged him to come. Still working hard at his 20+year addiction, Dean wasn’t interested.

But that day finally came. Tired of living this way and really did want to do different, Dean hopped a bus in Philadelphia — where he’s from =- and came to Baltimore to join HUM.

He settled in quickly, rekindling some of the recovery and spirituality he had experienced in the ’90s – and it felt good to be back. Today he has a home church, a home group, a sponsor and new a job at one of the local hospitals. Dean is genuinely excited about his future and we are so happy for him.

In my class today, Dean told the newest guys, “If I can do it, anybody can do it!” His gentle spirit and warm smile — direct results of the choices he’s made this past year — are a powerful invitation for anyone to go ahead and give it a try.
