In 1967, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas recored the pop/soul single “Jimmy Mack.” The first line went, “Jimmy, Jimmy, oh Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back?”
Last week at Helping Up Mission, I felt like Jimmy’s back – sort of! On Mondays we always share good things from the weekend. Two different guys shared a good word. Both are new here, both are young and both are named Jimmy.
J1 said his dad lives local but they haven’t spoken for 5 years. They talked this weekend and are planning to get together!
J2 said he hasn’t talked to his son in 5 years. Now 13 years old, son found out that dad was here and called J this weekend. They talked for 30 minutes!
The great news at HUM is that, when guys get serious about their recovery, family is overwhelmingly ready and willing to reconnect with that guy they used to know and love. Jimmy’s back — and so is his father and his son!
