Proverb for the Day 2:4 — Going For the Good Stuff!

…and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,…

This verse is part of the “if-then” directives Solomon offers his son at the beginning of this chapter (:1-5). He suggests his son go after wisdom, understanding and insight (:2-3) as he would “look for” or “search for” either “silver” or “hidden treasure.”

While we all understand the zeal with which we would go after treasure, Solomon might also be making another comparison. The truth is that these three qualities (wisdom, understanding, insight) could realistically be compared to financial wealth (silver, hidden treasure).

Proverbs is clear that wisdom, understanding and insight are absolutely accessible to any and all who want them. But it is also clear that we must actively go after them. And if they really are so valuable – then go for it!

And, of course, one of the attractions of Wisdom & Co. is that they actually bring silver, gold and treasure with them (see 3:13-16). Even better than our good old days, with wisdom we not only get to have stuff, but we also can learn how to keep it, enjoy it and share it with others.

Here at Helping Up Mission, we have some experience with going after what we want – whether things, money or drugs! Now, may we get committed to going for the good stuff!
