Slow Down, You Move Too Fast…!

In 1966, Simon and Garfunkel opened their “The 59th Street Bridge Song” (AKA “Feelin’ Groovy”) by suggesting, “Slow down, you move to fast.” Neither Jack nor Gene were alive then, but both are now starting to learn the concept!

Last week in class Jack, 27, was talking about understanding God’s plan for him. A local guy who’s struggled with drugs for a decade, this is his second time at Helping Up Mission and he believes the next step – during his final phase of our 1-year Program – is to go to college and get an education.

“The plan is to just take it slow,” He said. A quiet guy, there was resolve in his expression and words.

On the other hand, this is Gene’s first time at Helping Up Mission. At 48, from out of state and battling drug addiction for three decades, he’s feeling the need to get this thing done right.

Loud and demonstrative, Gene’s already in the final phase of our Program. He believes the plan for him is to go back to work.

But – speaking slowing and clearly – he said, “I think God wants me to slow down and be patient. I don’t need to just take the first opportunity I get. I’m willing to wait for the right one!”

Big-boy choices! Two very different guys and both understand how the process is supposed to work. To the best of our ability, we’ll let God lead the way…
