30 Years of Cocaine Can Change!!!

Saw Walt, 58, on our campus yesterday. He lives in the city but regularly stops by for a visit.

As we talked Walt shared how much he loves coming back to Helping Up Mission. “This place saved my life,” he added with a big smile.

At age 53, with a 30-year cocaine addiction, Walt arrived at HUM in 2010. While he also had a background in church and a personal relationship with God, by the time he got here his addiction had negated the power of both in his life.

So it shouldn’t be a big surprise that, once Walt stopped using cocaine, he also had a spiritual re-awakening. Good things were starting to happen in his heart and life again.

As part of that process, Walt attended a weekend spiritual retreat called Credo. He talked with me about that weekend — when he made some honest and serious commitments to God and how things have been consistently different for him ever since.

Walt graduated from our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program in 2011 and moved off campus the next year. On disability now, he spends his days doing ministry through his church.

He’s a happy and blessed guy today. Just ask him — he’ll be glad to tell you!
