Proverb for the Day 3:31 – It’ll Cost Us!

Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways.

This verse is pretty straight-forward and clear. While the focus is on “the violent,” the real message is our attitudes toward them.

“The violent” are willing to hurt others for personal gain – generally power or riches. But both life and the Bible tell us it’s only a matter of time before they have to face their own difficult end.

So we’re told here “do not envy the violent.” Don’t think that the power or wealth they achieve is anything to go after – because it will not last.

We’re also told not to “choose any of their ways.” Don’t decide to try this at home! Their choices only lead to pain and suffering for many around them – and, ultimately, for them, too.

Clearly missing from this wise saying is the reason why we shouldn’t want to be like the violent. I’ll suggest two.

Living this way always leads to others coming after us. And, eventually, someone else with a bigger gun than mine will show up and hurt me!

Even more so, the Bible is clear about God’s attitude toward “the violent.” And when He is finished with them, even they will decide the cost was just too high.

And that will probably come when it’s just too late! So “do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways” – it’s not worth it!
