“You Have To Go!”

In class yesterday I could see a guy hanging around outside the door, but couldn’t tell who it was. As soon as the class was over he stepped in and I recognized him.

Peter’s drug of choice was alcohol and he arrived here in 2008, at age 44, for our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program. Ready to try something different, he graduated one year later and moved on.

Peter got a good job, met a nice woman and they got married. Life was pretty good!

In fact, it was so good…Peter thought he might be able to have an occasional drink again. It wasn’t long before he was back in full-blown addiction.

His wife hadn’t known alcoholic Peter and finally said, “You have to go!” She decided she hadn’t signed up for a relationship with this guy.

Peter went to rehab for help. He said he was desperate and called out to God, saying something like, “Take this desire from me or take my life!”

Supernaturally, God did take the desire for alcohol away from him! Unfortunately, his wife decided she wasn’t staying for a possible round two and filed for divorce.

While she’s moved on — but they are friends today — his recovery stayed strong. Pete just celebrated 5 years sober a few months ago.

As we talked, I could hear the enthusiasm in his voice — for his recovery…for his spiritual walk…for his job…for his life!

I love meeting the new guys who come to Helping Up Mission for the first time. I’m glad to see guys make it back here if they’re struggling.

But I really enjoy watching guys continue walking their spiritual recovery one day, one week, one year at a time!
