Proverb for the Day 9:13-18 — Don’t Go There!

13 Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. 14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, 15 calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, 16 “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says, 17 “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” 18 But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

The first part of chapter 9 discusses Lady Wisdom’s perfect banquet in her perfect house for the perfect guests. Those who hang with her will really learn how to live!

The last part of the chapter introduces Lady Folly (:13- 18), who also has a house (:14). She, too, is “calling out” from “the highest point of the city” (:14-15).

No surprise, Lady Folly invites the exact same guests – “all those who are simple” and “those who have no sense” (:16). She also offers a “meal” – “stolen water” and “food eaten in secret” (:17).

The final commentary on her is the last verse of the chapter. Her guests have no idea that her place is where “the dead are” and that “her guests are deep in the realm of the dead” (:18).

Guys at Helping Up Mission know Lady Folly’s house and realize they’re fortunate to have escaped alive! They also know they have a standing invitation to Lady Wisdom’s house.

We’re invited, too! Every day…one day at a time!
