Sick, Injured and Drunk!

Carlos, 55 years old, was born in El Salvador but has been in the US for 35 years and is now a US citizen. But he’s also struggled with alcohol now for a couple of decades.

Working most of his career as a cook, Carlos has had some pretty good jobs. But circumstances related to alcohol finally got the best of him.

When Carlos arrived at Helping Up Mission eight months ago, he joined our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program. At that point he had a number of injuries and was pretty sick.

In fact, he got around with a walker and spent a lot of time in medical appointments. Carlos didn’t feel good — and he looked worse!

That was 8 months ago, I ran into him last week…and had to remind myself this was the same sick guy!

He actually looks 10 years younger…and then there was that genuine smile! Gratitude shows all over Carlos’ face. He says HUM saved his life.

Now clean — with injuries healed and health improved — Carlos took a job cooking in one of the good local restaurants. That was six weeks ago.

When we talked, he smiled as he told me he should have his Maryland driver’s license back in just a couple more weeks. He’s also made plans to purchase a car a month after that.

After graduation, he will continue to live on campus in our Graduate Transitional Housing. Carlos is a happy camper today…and he loves Helping Up Mission!

And I love my job!
