It Works for Young Guys, Too!

Darrell’s a twenty-something who’s struggled with drug addiction for a decade. He came to Helping Up Mission for our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program before, but was more interested in just feeling better — and, then, getting back out there to try it again.

He came back here, again, earlier this year — a little older, a little wiser and a lot more beat up!

So, this time Darrell got more focused and set some goals for his recovery and life. One was to earn that high school diploma he never got.

Each Friday we have a Chapel service to celebrate another week of recovery with the HUM band and singers. Here, we also welcome new men into our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program and recognize each guy who moves to the next phase of our Program. That generally includes a couple of graduates each week, as well.

This morning, Darrell came to tell me he earned his State of Maryland High School Diploma. He did his coursework through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) which we facilitate through our education department here on or campus.

He knows, every time a guy earns his diploma, we like to present him and his diploma in Chapel, as well. So Darrell said, “I just want to rest of the guys to know, if I can get my high school diploma – any of them can, too!”

In a few months, Darrell will complete his 12-month Program with us. Of course, afterwards, he’ll also be able to continue living here on campus if he chooses.

But, this time, Darrell will be so much better equipped to do something meaningful and exciting as he heads back out there to work or live in the community.

Spiritual recovery really does work…
