We Are Family…Well, Sort Of!

Danny’s a quiet 50-something with a ponytail who sits on the back of class every day and hardly ever says anything. We try to accept and respect guys were they are and gently invite them to grow.

So, I give Danny the space he needs. Here for about 5 months, he came up after class asking for some help with a test he is taking. I got to find out more of his story right then than I had heard since he’d arrived here.

In my class Danny is learning about the Bible and memorizing some verses. Its all new stuff to him, but he is diligent in getting his work done.

Danny got to our 12-month residential Spiritual Recovery Program at Helping Up Mission by way of a local hospital. He has struggled with alcohol for decades. There’s hardly any family out there for him and not too many other meaningful relationships, either.

I think we are slowly becoming family for Danny now. We’re just glad he’s here – and while he doesn’t show it much, I think he is, too!

Not sure what’s next for D, but I know God has a wonderful plan for his life. I also know his dysfunctional Helping Up Mission family will be there for him!
